Our customer reviews

Digitapes did a lovely job of transferring some old TV performances of mine from VHS to digital. The whole process was smooth as silk from start to finish from dropping my tapes over to them in-person, having one of the tapes repaired (ready for transfer), having them digitised, to popping them into a Dropbox folder for me to download. The operative was also very friendly and helpful. I'd highly recommend Digitapes to anybody. Many Thanks.
This was a fantastic, quick and reliable service to digitalise my Hi8 tape. I needed a same day send over and this was a life saver! Good price and great quality. Will definitely be using again.
Really quick and efficient service. Got a cassette tape onto a file, which my mum hadn't heard in years and she was extremely happy.
Great service, converted all of my old family videos to digital files in a quick amount of time and the process was simple. Communication was very good. Would highly recommend.
These guys did the job fast, at a fraction of the cost of the other options.
It was brilliant to be able to get all my memories as a child and my family memories restored. This is truly the best thing that's happened this year! Brilliant company and customer service! Thank you

Why should I digitize my old photos and videos?
Physical media like tapes, films, and audio recordings inevitably deteriorate over time, risking permanent loss of your valuable moments. As legacy playback equipment becomes obsolete, accessing these original formats becomes increasingly difficult. Converting your media to digital formats ensures long-term preservation, effortless playback, and seamless sharing with family. We offer flexible delivery options, including USB flash drives, DVDs, and secure digital cloud storage tailored to your preferences.
How does the media digitization process actually work?
Our conversion process relies on professional-grade playback equipment specific to each media type. Tapes are run through high-specification decks, while legacy formats are processed using dedicated hardware to capture high-quality digital output. Prior to transfer, we thoroughly inspect all items, providing routine cleaning and repairs to resolve performance issues whenever possible. Completed conversions are delivered on your choice of USB, DVD, or secure online storage.
Is it possible to digitize my old tapes and media at home?
Doing it yourself can yield mixed results. Cheap USB capture tools and old, unserviced players often lead to glitchy video, lost frames, distorted sound, or unstable playback. Aged tapes are also fragile, and pushing a damaged recording through an old player can cause permanent harm. We use professional-grade equipment and handle legacy formats every day, giving your original media the absolute best chance at a clean, high-quality digital transfer.
Will I be able to watch the digital files on my phone or Smart TV?
Yes, definitely! We convert your videos into MP4 format, which plays smoothly on almost all modern phones, tablets, computers, and Smart TVs. We can deliver your files on a USB drive or send them through secure online storage. Prefer physical media? DVD copies are also available for compatible formats. If you specifically need your VHS tapes moved onto a flash drive, check out our VHS to USB service.
What kinds of old media formats do you convert?
We convert almost every classic video, film, and audio format out there—including VHS, camcorder tapes, VHS-C, Betamax, Cine Film, and much more. Not quite sure what kind of tapes or media you have? Just snap a quick photo and send it to us, or browse the conversion options in the top navigation menu.
My tapes and media are over 30 years old—can they still be saved?
In most cases, absolutely! We routinely digitize recordings that are several decades old. Storage conditions matter way more than age, so if your media was kept somewhere dry and stable, it usually converts really well. Even if a tape or film shows signs of wear, we can often clean it, fix minor damage, or tweak our equipment to rescue as much of the original recording as possible.
What kind of quality can I expect from digital conversion?
We aim to get the best practical picture and sound quality available from the original media. The final result will still be limited by the quality and condition of the source, so an old analogue recording will not suddenly look like modern HD or 4K footage. Professional playback equipment can, however, make a significant difference to stability, tracking, colour and sound compared with cheap home conversion equipment.
What if my old tape or media is damaged?
We regularly deal with damaged old media, including snapped tapes, cracked cassette shells, tangled tape and even mouldy tapes. Repairs are handled manually using specialist tools and equipment. If an item can be made playable again, we'll do our best to recover the recording. Some badly damaged media cannot be recovered, so we'll contact you if we find a problem that prevents normal conversion.
I found some unlabelled tapes - can you check what's on them?
Yes. Lots of customers send us old tapes without knowing exactly what they contain. We can convert the recordings so you can go through them digitally rather than trying to identify everything using old playback equipment at home. If a tape turns out to be blank, we'll return it to you without charging for a conversion.
Will the sound be included when my old videos are converted?
Yes. If the original recording contains audio, we transfer that along with the picture. Our equipment is set up to reproduce the best available audio track from the original source. The quality will depend on the recording itself and the condition of the media, but the aim is always to retain the original sound as faithfully as possible.
How do you deal with old tapes that have playback or tracking problems?
We use professional playback equipment that gives us much more control than most domestic machines. For formats such as VHS to Digital, this can include high-quality VCRs with features such as timebase correction to reduce problems including picture wobble, jitter and rolling lines. Different media formats require different equipment, so we use the setup best suited to the original recording.
Can I get more than one copy of my converted media?
Yes. You can order additional USB sticks or DVDs where applicable, and digital files are easy to copy for family members or backups. Many customers use one copy for everyday viewing and keep another as a backup of important family recordings.
What's the difference between USB, DVD and digital download?
USB gives you digital files that can be copied, backed up, edited and played on many computers, televisions and other modern devices. A digital download gives you similar files through private online storage, without needing a physical USB stick. DVD is useful if you prefer something that can be put directly into a DVD player. If you're converting videotapes, we offer both VHS to USB and a VHS to DVD option.
Can I edit the files after my old media has been converted?
Yes. Once you receive your digital files, you can copy, organise and edit them however you like. Video files can be loaded into editing software so you can trim sections, add titles, combine recordings or create shorter family films. We also remove sections of video that contain nothing but a black screen with no audio.
Do you improve old recordings or just make a digital copy?
Our priority is to produce a clean and stable digital copy without making the recording look artificial. We don't add fake sharpening or heavy filters. Instead, we use good playback equipment, clean media where appropriate and use the available hardware correction features to get the best result from the source. The final file still reflects the original recording, including any faults that are permanently recorded on it.
Is it safe to send old tapes and media in the post?
Yes. Customers send us old family recordings from across the UK every day. We use Royal Mail Tracked 48 for return delivery, and items are logged when they arrive with us. We know many recordings are irreplaceable, so originals are handled carefully throughout the conversion process.
Will you send my original media back after conversion?
Yes. Your original tapes, films and other media are returned after conversion along with any physical USB or DVD copies you've ordered. Return postage is sent using Royal Mail Tracked 48 and is fully insured. If we have carried out a repair to an item during the conversion process, we'll also let you know.
Do I need to rewind or prepare my tapes before sending them?
No. You don't need to rewind tapes or do any special preparation before sending them to us. We'll handle that using the correct playback equipment here. In fact, if a tape is particularly old or hasn't been played for years, it can be better to leave it alone rather than putting it through an ageing home machine before sending it.
How long does digital conversion take?
Turnaround depends mainly on the type and quantity of media you send. A single VHS to Digital, Cine Film or camcorder to digital conversion will usually take around one working day to process once we receive it. Larger collections can take one to two weeks. We'll keep you updated and email you when your order is ready.
Can you convert tapes that were recorded abroad?
Yes. For compatible video formats, we can work with PAL, NTSC and SECAM recordings. This is useful if your old tapes were recorded overseas, bought abroad or sent to you by relatives in another country. We have multi-standard playback equipment that allows us to convert many of these recordings into modern digital files.
